The Michigan State Alumni office is seeking a Sparty Mascot Program Assistant. Sparty is a national visible mascot that makes appearances at approximately 750 athletic events, university-related functions, and private events annually, resulting in more than 4,500 student volunteer hours. The Assistant will manage all aspects of the MSU mascot program.
Reporting to the MSU Alumni Office Associate Director, the Sparty Mascot Program Assistant manages aspects of the MSU mascot program. Sparty is a national visible mascot that makes appearances at approximately 750 athletic events, university-related functions, and private events annually, resulting in more than 4,500 student volunteer hours.
The Sparty Mascot Program Assistant will be accountable for the seamless execution of the program while providing exceptional levels of client customer service, maintaining a high level of student engagement, and building relationships with campus and community partners.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
The job requires knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in the planning and production of institutional and/or events; contractor and vendor contract negotiations, and developing event budget reports; experience in a customer-service environment; and experience in database, spreadsheet, word processing and presentation software; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in the field of live event entertainment.
- Knowledge of teaching, coaching, and current trends in mascot management
- Ability to quickly tackle challenges within a dynamic and high-pressure environment.
- Outstanding leadership, ability to exercise sound judgment, exhibit resiliency under pressure, set priorities and achieve goals, handle confidential information and navigate sensitive situations.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a broad range of internal and external constituents including alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends of the university.
- Ability to work in an environment in-arena that will include loud music and crowd noise, flashing and strobe lights; out-of-arena work may be in extreme temperatures including outdoor events during all seasons.
- Familiarity with higher education, alumni outreach, and engagement.
- Excellent project management, organizational and planning skills as well as superior attention to detail.
- Experience in marketing, event promotion, and social media.
- Experience managing program budgets and expenses.
