The MSU Alumni Association’s mission is to build lifelong enrichment for our nearly 500,000 alumni throughout the world. Reporting to the MSU Alumni Association Associate Director, the Accountant will provide accounting controls for the Michigan State University Alumni Association; serve as fiscal officer, prepare, examine and analyze accounting records, financial statements or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and conformance to University business procedures; develop, implement, modify, and document recordkeeping and accounting systems; maintain fund ledgers; make use of Enterprise Business Systems (EBS) and other appropriate computer technology; prepare reports that compare event budgeted costs to actual costs; assist in analyzing business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations to project future revenues and expenses or to provide advice; process travel reimbursements, sponsorships and advertising revenues, invoices, deposits; maintain procurement card records and purchase orders. The position supports an office that is fast paced and requires working nights and weekends based on operational needs.
Qualifications
The job requires knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Accounting; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in financial statement and report preparation, general ledger accounting and budgeting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience as unit Fiscal Officer for multiple accounts
- Ability to understand the University’s accounting system.
- Familiarity with and an awareness of the laws and regulations that apply to an accounting function and are required to ensure compliance.
- Ability to exercise judgement in the processing and resolution of non-routine accounting matters while assuming responsibility for those decisions.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- May require valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position.
- Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
- This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
