Description

Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) and University Development at Michigan State University seek an established fundraiser to provide leadership in training, donor cultivation and soliciting gifts of all sizes while developing a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization. MSUE’s more than 600 staff members across Michigan provide a gateway

for campus experts to connect with communities. For more than 100 years, MSUE has helped people improve their lives by bringing the vast knowledge resources of MSU directly to individuals, communities, and businesses throughout the State of Michigan.  Areas of emphasis include:

MSUE provides a leadership role in responding to the emergent needs of communities, building on relationships and partnerships that have been cultivated for decades.  Philanthropy will increasingly become an essential mechanism for supporting growth to enable new and expanded services to our constituents throughout the State of Michigan.

In partnership with the leadership of a dynamic and energetic MSUE Director and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Development and External Relations team, the Director of Development for MSUE will be a confident, creative, enthusiastic and results-oriented development leader. This person shall have an understanding of and appreciation for the broad range of MSUE programming the potential for cultivating prospects throughout Michigan in order to build upon the foundation of its advancement program. This person shall have experience managing a fundraising team in an environment in which accountability-based metrics are used as benchmarks of performance. The Director of Development will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individuals, corporations and foundations for significant 5, 6 and 7-figure support, working closely with the Director, Associate Director, Institute Directors, and District Coordinators who provide leadership for the organization.

The Director of Development is expected to be an accomplished, responsive and collaborative leader of the MSUE advancement effort who executes an aggressive calendar of donor activity to ensure a continuous pipeline of private support for the college.  In partnership with the MSUE Director, the Director will work as part of an Extension focus team with the 4-H Foundation Board, 4-H Campaign Manager and any other advisory groups/boards that may facilitate fundraising.  As part of the CANR advancement team, the Director will report directly to the CANR Senior Director of Development and External Relations and the Director of MSU Extension. 

 

Qualifications

Required: Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in such fields as communications, public relations, business, the arts, the humanities or similar programs; three - five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in professional fundraising, public relations, marketing, or a related field OR three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive professional experience in higher education development, public relations, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. This position requires travel.

Desired:  Undergraduate degree; advanced degree preferred; three to five years in professional fundraising, preferably demonstrating progressive responsibility and experience in higher education fundraising; demonstration of an understanding of the key development disciplines of principal gifts, major gifts, planned gifts, corporate and/or foundation gifts and annual gifts; proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward leadership gifts at the six and seven-figure level; knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving; a track record of success leading a development operation; and approach to management that brings out the best in staff and yields pride, ownership and a sense of team effort; superior communication skills and the ability to connect with a variety of audiences; clear and effective written and oral presentations; demonstrated ability to plan and successfully execute a significant comprehensive campaign.
